Buses disrupted in Long Eaton accident

Bus services RED5, Indigo, Long Eaton Express (LEX) and various school runs suffered heavy disruption in the Long Eaton and Toton areas this morning, after a serious collision at the end of station road. Traffic was diverted along Toton Lane and the A52 in both directions, and there were four Indigo buses behind each other, all travelling up Toton Hill at a crawl. Premiere Travel’s RED5 was also diverted, which slightly spoiled their “fast and direct” slogan on the side of the buses. Services 15 (In Sawley) and 17 (In Toton) also ran late, as traffic spilled onto their normal routes in search of a diversion. Along the A52 Red Arrow, Transpeak and National Express coaches faced long delays as all the traffic from Long Eaton headed onto the main trunk route. Skills coaches faced delays on some of their Trent College and Bilborough College routes, and Premiere Travel service 517 made use of a service road near Briar Gate to escape the stop-start traffic. Erewash community transport vehicles were also caught up in the disruption, with Sprinter FJ09 HTE shown attempting to get up Bostocks Lane in Risley.
The disruption was caused at 00:00 on the 27/01/12, by a van driven by a drink driver, who was failing to stop for the police. He then hit a cyclist at the junction of station road, who recieved serious injuries, and the police closed the road until around 10:00. Bus services were diverted along Swiney Way, Toton Lane, A52, Bostocks Lane and into Long Eaton via Derby Road, but Premiere's RED5 served Sawley before Long Eaton in a loop around the area to avoid traffic congestion in one direction. Only two bus stops were taken out of use in each direction (Station road in both directions, George street and

Both bus companies had extra vehicles and staff out on the routes, and customer feedback on Facebook has been positive and accepting. RTAs can and will happen, and it is good that in this case the companies have worked well to minimise disruption, and inform passengers when it does occur.
